Hemelraad-Horn Family Papers

After the war ended, families torn apart by deportations and internment in concentration camps returned to their homes, hoping to find their loved ones. When they were not successful, many turned to the Red Cross for information about the fates of their family and friends.

In this response to an inquiry about Wim, Alex and Carla Hemelraad - two brothers and a sister from the Netherlands, the Dutch Red Cross reported in February 1946 that Wim and Carla were deported first to Westerbork and then on to Auschwitz, and that Alex was transported to Theresienstadt. No other information was available at that time, but the Red Cross indicated that they would be in contact if they learned more. The family was later to learn that all three had perished at Auschwitz.
